Dental Filling Options

Due to advances in modern dental material and techniques dentists today have many ways of restoring your teeth for a bright smile.

Different materials and techniques are applied for specific types of restorations with different cost implications.

  • Amalgam Although this material has been used for more than a century with good results, our practice is in principal a metal free practice. There are concerns that the Mercury used in amalgam could be harmful to the body. We only use it in restorations done in theatre in milk teeth in small children because it is strong and not technique sensitive. These teeth will be lost in any case and be replaced by permanent teeth. Because of its colour, amalgam is not aesthetically pleasing.
  • Composite fillings are the modern white resin restorations that have replaced amalgam.  They are just as strong and long-lasting, but are very technique sensitive to place.  No saliva or blood may contaminate the site. That is why it is very difficult to place in children who don’t always remain still. These restorations are bonded to the teeth by a bonding agent. Over time these fillings may discolour or break and may have to be replaced. If the cavity is too large, these restorations may not be suitable and inlays or crowns are a better option for good long term results.
  • Inlays are ceramic restorations that are done in posterior teeth if the defect is too large for composite repair. In our practice these are done in one sitting thanks to the CEREC system we use. These restorations are also white in colour, but are quite strong because they are cut outside the mouth with our In lab technology and bonded to the teeth with a strong resin cement.
  • Crowns are placed if the restoration is too big to be repaired by an inlay. Again these are done in one sitting with the help of the highly sophisticated CEREC system.
  • Veneers restore discoloration, cracks and small chips in the front teeth, also in one sitting with the help of CEREC.
  • Root Canals are done daily in our practice for caries so far advanced that they affect the nerve of the tooth. This condition is often associated with severe toothache and abscesses. The purpose of a root canal is twofold: it firstly relieves acute toothache and secondly saves a tooth from being extracted. It is a mith that a root canal today is an excruciating painful procedure. We have imported an Aseptico computer controlled drill from America into which the revolutions and torque permissible for each of the 2°, 4° or 6° endodontic files of different sizes we use have been preprogrammed. The implication is that is is highly unlikely that one of those thin files used to clean your root canal will break. As soon as the maximum preprogrammed torque has been reached, the drill will go into auto reverse mode and will be ejected from the root canal before it breaks.
