CEREC Crowns, Inlays & Veneers

CEREC is the acronym for Ceramic Reconstruction. This system consists of a Computer Workstation and a Milling machine. We use the newest model CEREC AC Workstation equipped with a bluecam camera and the newest model MC XL inlab milling machine.

The damaged tooth is prepared by the dentist and an optical impression is taken with the Bluecam camera. This camera has an accuracy of a few microns for a perfect restoration. Your dentist now designs a crown on the computer while you watch the procedure on the large TV screen.

This design is sent to the Milling machine via bluetooth. A ceramic block with a colour to match your excisting teeth is chosen and inserted into the milling machine. Four tiny diamond cutters mill this block down to the crown designed on the Workstation within 12 minutes, with an accuracy of a few microns. You, the patient, can again watch this amazing CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technology while in progress.

The new crown is fitted on the prepared base and adjustments are made if necessary.

Shades of colour are added to precisely match your excisting teeth.

The crown is baked in an oven at 850° to strengthen it almost to the standard of your excisting teeth.

This new crown is now cemented onto its base in your mouth.

Advantages of CEREC

  • A crown is made and placed in one visit of 2 hours to the dentist.
  • No temporary crown is needed.
  • The dentist can match the size, shape and colour of the new crown exactly to your existing teeth. Remember, the dentist sits right next to you while the crown is being designed.
  • Perfect contact points between the new crown and the excisting teeth can be designed. The accuracy of this amazing technology is a few microns. The implication of this is that food is deflected from the gap between your teeth rather than being wedged between the teeth while chewing.
  • Not only crowns are produced with this technology, but also inlays, veneers and small bridges.
  • An inlay is used if a large part of the tooth can be saved, but the cavity is too large for a composite repair. The cavity is prepared, a Bluecam impression is made, the inlay is designed and the cut on the milling machine. The inlay is baked and cemented into the prepared cavity. This process is shorter than the preparation of a crown.
  • A veneer is a thin ceramic layer cemented onto an excisting tooth after preparation of the tooth. More or less the same process is followed as with a crown or inlay.
  • Small bridges are Cantilever bridges which consist of one crowned tooth and one pontic.  The principles of designing these bridges are the same as designing a single tooth crown, the only difference is that the crown fits on the prepared tooth and has an extension that fills the gap left by a missing tooth. These bridges are only suitable in certain cases and aren’t always an option.
